STEM Academy Student Advances to Science & Engineering Fair
Congratulations to STEM Academy student Jocelyn E. Hernandez, who won 1st Place Grand Prize in Fair II Health Sciences at the Alamo Regional Academy of Science and Engineering Fair. Jocelyn will advance to the Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair® (Intel ISEF).
Intel ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition and annually provides a forum for more than 1,500 high school students from about 70 countries, regions, and territories to showcase their independent research. Intel ISEF is commonly referred to as the premier global science competition.
Jocelyn will be presenting her project titled “Seeking a Cure: Natural Estrogen Receptor Beta Agonist in the Treatment of Therapy Resistant Breast Cancer Cells.” Her study investigated the use of a novel therapy for breast cancer treatment that used the natural compound S-Equol. S-Equol is a natural compound that is produced from the consumption of soy.
The future scientists' data suggest that upon S-Equol treatment, the proliferation of cells was in fact inhibited and the metastatic potential was mitigated.
Jocelyn will be traveling to Phoenix, AZ in May to compete for more than $3 million in awards and scholarships.
